Our Mental Health is Influenced by Our Social Environment
Most are aware that genetics and lifestyle are major contributors to mental health outcomes. However, few are aware of the impact the environment has on our overall well-being. Your social environment can trigger susceptible genes and influence lifestyle choices. People's choices are encouraged by upbringing, cultural/societal norms, and the groups they are a part of. Your social environment can either be a source of support or a source of stress. Chronic stress can make people susceptible to mental health problems.

Chronic Stress Continues to Skyrocket
The American Psychological Association continues to report that stress in America is a national mental health crisis. Stress is a normal reaction to everyday pressures, but when stressors feel prolonged and overwhelming it is known as chronic stress. More and more people are experiencing chronic stress due to individual, family, community, national and global problems, which has impacted the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of many. This has also led to behavioral reactivity towards others that only perpetuate the problem.
Kindness Improves Well-Being
Studies show that acts of incivility/rudeness have become commonplace in today's world. This is especially noticeable in the workplace and on social media. Those who experience uncivil acts have an increase in irritability, stress, and cognitive dysfunction. Additionally, those who experience or witness uncivil acts are more likely to be uncivil to others. While we may not have control over many of the issues that induce stress in our world, we do have control on how we treat others. Research shows that acts of kindness help reduce stress and improve overall wellbeing for both the recipient and the giver. So be kind to yourself by being kind to others.
